How to optimize your tanning!

How often should I be tanning? How does the tanning process work? How do I get super dark?! These are all questions our tanning professionals hear often, and there is a simple scientific explanation: When building your base tan, or to get darker color results, you want to be tanning every 2 to 3 days.

The combo of UVA and UVB in a Tanning bed stimulates melanin production within 5-7 minutes of exposure. As soon as the bed shuts off, the melanin stops being produced and is held in the Melanocyte for 24 hours. Once it’s been 24 hours, then the melanin gets released into the skin as a clear liquid substance. Then it takes your body 0-6 hours to oxidize the melanin and turn it from clear to brown. This is why we recommend tanning two days on, then one day off, then two days on, to build the best base tan.

Tanning for Special Events Guide

The holidays are here! During this time of year, the employees at the tanning salons are always getting last minute phone calls from clients asking how to get tan fast. Some of the most popular times for spray tans include Christmas, New Years and Valentines Day.  Here are some helpful tips to make sure you are glowing during this festive season.

Start tanning early:

If you plan on tanning in a tanning bed, to get your color this season, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to build your tan at a safe pace. You want at least two weeks to build your tan in a Level 1 or 2 bed and about a week in a Level 3 or 4 bed, getting in a minimum of 4 tanning sessions a week.

Use tanning lotion:

Did you know that when you tan without a lotion, it can take 5-7 minutes for the tanning process to start? Pairing your tanning with a great tanning lotion will accelerate the process, as well as supply your skin with the necessary skin care (anti-aging, firming, hydrating, etc.) to keep your skin looking youthful and your tan lasting longer.

Try a spray tan:

If you’re in a pinch, and need a quick tan, try a spray tan. Sunchain offers two spray tanning options: Mystic Booth Spray Tan and South Seas Custom Air Brush. Mystic Spray Tans can be done any time throughout the day and Custom Air Brush Spray Tans are by appointment only.

For both spray tans, you want to be sure to schedule all beauty appointments (hair cuts, manicures/pedicures, waxing, etc.) before you plan to spray. Also make sure that after you get your spray tan, you will not be doing anything with excessive movement, or water involved. Any type of moisture can stop the tanning process, potentially streaking your spray tan results.

It is best to arrive for your spray tan with clean, exfoliated skin, and loose clothing.  It can take up to 8 hours to fully process a spray tan, and if you’re still in a pinch for time, try one of our accelerator lotions, which can process your spray tan quicker, in 2-4 hours!

Holiday Gifts:

Don’t forget to get some presents while you’re in. Our salons offer great gifts throughout the year like teeth whitening kits, bronzing powders, and extender lotions, as well as gift cards!!

Hopefully we can help make your holiday season as great as it can be!!

Happy Holidays!

Scientists Blow The Lid on Cancer & Sunscreen Myth

According to a June 2014 article featured in The Independent (UK), a major study conducted by researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that women who avoid sunbathing during the summer are twice as likely to die as those who sunbathe every day.

The epidemiological study followed 30,000 women for over 20 years and “showed that mortality was about double in women who avoided sun exposure compared to the highest exposure group.”

Researchers concluded that the conventional dogma, which advises avoiding the sun at all costs and slathering on sunscreen to minimize sun exposure, is doing more harm than actual good.

That’s because overall sun avoidance combined with wearing sunscreen effectively blocks the body’s ability to produce vitamin D3 from the sun’s UVB rays, which is by far the best form of vitamin D.

In the USA, vitamin D deficiency is at epidemic levels. Ironically, vitamin D deficiency can lead to aggressive forms of skin cancer. A ground-breaking 2011 study published in Cancer Prevention Research suggests that optimal blood levels of vitamin D offers protection against sunburn and skin cancer.

Additionally, vitamin D protects the body from diseases like multiple sclerosis, rickets (in the young), tuberculosis, inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and Sjogren’s syndrome.

According to the Vitamin D Council, researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham recently reported that “lack of sun exposure may lead to cognitive decline over time.”

What Does The Anti-Tanning Lawsuit Mean To You?

“It is unfortunate that Nebraska tanning salon owners must seek relief in the legal system to preserve the right to operate our businesses free from misinformation and attacks,” said Curt Bowen, president of a Nebraska salon franchise group president, in a press release. “But in this case, our very livelihoods are on the line.”

Salons around the country have rallied around the effort, making contributions to the ASA Legal Fund to support the fight. They know the impact will extend well beyond Nebraska, but where do we all go from here? At Smart Tan Nashville we will discuss the litigation as well as other steps the ASA is taking to refute misstatements and get the message about UV back on track.

Vitamin D

When was the last time you got your daily dose of vitamin D? For years we have known that vitamin D is important to our health and, in recent years, we are starting to learn the best ways to get our daily dose. You can get vitamin D in multiple ways including vitamin D supplement, certain foods, and UV rays. The most direct and beneficial way to get your daily dose is through UV exposure; skin can easily absorb the rays.

Why is vitamin D so important? Besides adding a spring to your step, vitamin D can keep you healthy. Being exposed to UV rays 3 times a week for just 10 minutes can boost your immune system, aid in the absorption of vital nutrients, regulate blood pressure, and strengthen bones. An easy and convenient way to get a dose of vitamin D, as well as a boost of color, is through the use of tanning beds. You will not only look great with your sexy color, but you will also be supplying your body with a vital nutrient that is needed for it to function properly!

Tanning Bed VS Spray Tan

When you walk into a tanning salon you usually have two options as to how to get your color; tanning beds or spray tan. They both have the great benefit of achieving a nice, bronze color, but which one is for you?

Tanning beds have been around since having bronze skin became popular, around the 1970’s. Today, tanning beds are an easy way to keep glowing skin year round! Let’s look at some pro’s and con’s to tanning beds:

Pros: Tanning beds can give you a natural looking glow or a full, dark tan depending on what you are looking for; all you need to do is adjust your time and frequency. The need to lay out in the sun for hours is drastically cut down to no more than 20 minutes. Tanning beds are especially nice during the hot Arizona summer! The best part is you do not experience unsightly tan lines!

Cons: Unlike tanning in the sun, a tanning bed does cost money. There is also a chance of having to wait for a bed, especially the higher level beds.

Spray tans can be another great way to get color! You can be in and out of the salon fast with glowing, bronzed skin! Just like tanning beds, spray tans can also have its positives and negatives

Pros: Unlike tanning in a bed, spray tanning will give you almost instant color; most spray tans will give you color in 24 hours so it is great when you need to be tan fast! Most spray tan machines also offer a range of levels to give you the perfect shade of bronze.

Cons: The main disadvantage to spray tans is the color only lasts for around a week. The color will fade as your skin sheds dead skin cells. It is also difficult to get spray tans during the summer as sweat, chlorine, and salt water can strip the color. The last disadvantage is unevenness. If directions are not followed correctly, then you can end up with an uneven tan especially around fingers, elbows, knees and wrists. They can be easily fixed, but sometimes hard to avoid.

Tanning is all based on personal preference! Some people only do one of the two, others alternate between both! To figure out what is best for you, try doing both and see which one you like best!

Achieve Your Best Tan

With winter right around the corner, many people are looking for the best ways to keep their summer glow! Follow these tips below and you will be rocking that glow year round!

  • Tan with a tanning lotion. Without a tanning lotion, you lose the first 5-7 minutes of your tanning time because it is more difficult for bare skin to absorb the rays. Tanning lotions can also increase the life of your tan, deepen the color, moisturize skin, and protect skin against premature aging!

  • Never increase your time by too much. A good increase in time is around 1-3 minutes depending on your skin. Increasing by too much can cause burning and discomfort. Watch how your skin reacts and listen to your Tanning Professionals to figure out what time is best for you.

  • Make sure to give your skin a break; do not tan every day. Just like anything, tan in moderation. When building a bas tan, try tanning 2 days on and 1 day off. This will give your skin a break and keep your skin from hitting a color plateau. When maintaining your tan, depending on your skin, a few sessions a week can keep your color from fading.

  • MOISTURIZE! Tan extenders are amazing! During the winter, skin becomes more dry causing skin to flake. Keep your skin soft and glowing by always moisturizing especially after tanning and showering.

With the help of a Sunchain tanning professional and these tips, you will have sexy, glowing skin all year round!

Benefits of UV Exposure

When talking about the effects of UV exposure it is important to address the positive effects it has on your body both inside and out. Indoor tanning beds provide a viable alternative to natural sunlight, provided they are used sensibly. Studies show a positive association between tanning bed use and higher serum levels of vitamin D. One case study successfully used a tanning bed as the method of treatment for vitamin D deficiency due to Crohn’s disease. As with natural sunlight, vitamin D production from a tanning bed happens within minutes. Actual tanning of the skin and overexposure are not necessary

As you know, sunlight is one of the best sources of vitamin D. This nutrient helps boost your immune system, fight cancer, lower your risk of osteoporosis, control blood pressure, improve insulin resistance, and so much more. And, of course, when you don’t get enough of it, you’re opening yourself up to all sorts of problems.

One new study published in Clinical Endocrinology confirms earlier research, which shows that the less D you have, the sooner you’ll kick the bucket.

Believe me, you don’t just want this stuff – you need it.

Dermatologist Appointment #3: Large Medical Building In Pacific Heights

These dermatology offices all seem to subscribe to the exact same Botox pamphlets and literature. Sure the sun gets a bad rap from dermatologists, but that’s nothing compared to their take on indoor tanning booths. Dermatologists, along with the media, have launched a full out blitzkrieg on the tanning industry. A recent 20/20 report made it seem like indoor tanning was as dangerous as putting the bronze barrel of a gun in your mouth. If I were to believe their reports, an indoor tanning session is as deadly as arsenic and as addictive as heroin.

Meanwhile, dermatologists sell indoor tanning sessions in their own offices for up to $100 a visit to treat cosmetic skin conditions. Could some of their angst at indoor tanning be about profit? A January 2009 article states that some psoriasis patients have benefited from commercial-grade tanning beds that use UVB radiation; many of which are actively in use in dermatologists office across America. The indoor tanning industry reports that 1 million clients are actually referred to them annually by dermatologists to treat psoriasis, eczema and other cosmetic skin conditions. But stepping into a tanning booth, according to dermatology lobbying groups, is about as dangerous as jumping in front of a speeding truck. UV light, in the form of sun or indoor tanning, produces vitamin D. (Affectionately known as the “sunshine vitamin.”) Surely dermatologists must see some benefit in moderate UV light?
