A little sun may prevent Vitamin D deficiency
This month the National Institutes of Health is hosting a conference to explore
the possibility that vitamin D deficiency may be a problem in the United States.
Vitamin D deficiency has long been linked with bone-debilitating diseases such
as osteoporosis and osteomalacia. Recent research has found vitamin D deficiency
may elevate the risk of many forms of cancer, including breast, colon, ovarian
and prostate tumors.
Rare in diet, an estimated 90 percent of the body's vitamin D is formed when
skin is exposed to ultraviolet light from the sun. Indoor tanning is the
smartest way to maximize these benefits while minimizing the risks.
